CNY Shopping

CNY or Spring Festival is the biggest festival in China but we feel that the festive atmosphere over here pales in comparison to what we have back at home (in Malaysia). Surprising, isn't it?

We don't see much CNY decorations on the streets or anywhere else. As for the malls, hmm... let's just say that the people here don't place much emphasis on mere decorations...

Small, plain and simple only (this is considered quite a huge and happening mall!)

Hypermarket decor... a pillar of cute horses in the auspicious colours of red and yellow

Window shopping only...

CNY paraphernalia and all things red

Racks and racks of angpau packets on sale (free ones are rare so the people have no choice but to BUY them)

Here are some of the local CNY goodies...

Sweets... aisles and aisles of them from soft candies to hard candies to chocolates, nougat etc. It is quite a surprising fact that the local Chinese actually eat a lot of sweets!

Imported chocolates and Danish butter cookies are very popular here

Lots of whole nuts... almond, walnut, pecan, peanut, macadamia, hazel nut, pine nut, cashew, pistachio, you name it! Not cheap though...

Look, a peanut mountain!

Waxed meat... from the zero-legged (fish) to two-legged and four-legged... everything also got but err, these are NOT for us. No thank you ;)

Mandarin oranges are sold by weight, not in boxes

Nuts galore! Mummy bought mostly nuts and seeds to be distributed as gifts when we go home (this is less than half of the total stuff she bought!)

Yes, we will be home for CNY. Can't wait!!! :)

  1. LOL on your descriptions on no leg to 2 legged to 4 legged !

That's lot of nuts ! Heard China nuts are fresh and delicious. But, they are so heavy. Won't it add weight on your baggage ?

Anyway, welcome home and hope you have a wonderful CNY celebration back home !

  2. Surprising huh... that in a big metropolitan in CHINA the decos are not that many nor hyped up?! But I guess you'll be expecting many parades and dances?

It's better to buy mandarin oranges from loose pieces, so you can avoid the soft and spoilt ones, also no pressure to eat so much! Actually I haven't even touched one, nor have we bought any at all.

Next time you come back, come visit me lar... I give you many many angpow packets... but empty one ah!
