Perfect Eyesight No More!

20112011 may appear to be a special date for many but for me, it is a date that signifies a big change in my physical appearance. I am going to wear glasses! *sobs*

It all started many months back when daddy and mummy noticed something wrong with my eyesight. I was unable to see or read signs/notices that were quite a distance away (although they could). After many similar "tests", when they told me to read something from a distance and I failed to do so, they finally brought me to consult an eye specialist.

I underwent a series of eye check, eye test, eye dilation and eye re-test, and the results indicated that I have myopia (short-sightedness) with signs of lazy eye. According to the doctor, my vision may be correctable but I will have to wear a special lens (specially for kids) until I am at least 10 years old.

The preliminary test... to roughly measure my "power" (the degree of my short-sightedness)

Going through the "alphabet test" to determine the accuracy of my power

After my power has been confirmed, I had to wear these temporary lenses for at least 10 minutes to make sure the power was ok and did not make me dizzy

My power... it's about 200+ in both eyes

Mummy was very, very upset at the very thought of me wearing glasses at such a tender age. Daddy and her started wearing glasses at the ages of 13 and 12 respectively so they had kinda expected me to follow suit at around that age too. I am currently awaiting my new pair of glasses that we had ordered on Sunday (yesterday). Come Wednesday, I will be "four-eyed" for a very, very long time, no thanks to my addiction to the telly and bad reading habits such as this...

A bookworm with the wrong reading position (actually I don't do this often, mummy caught me doing this just once hehe)

  3. Reading this, there is no choice, but to wear spec to correct Chloe's eye sight. It is kind of norm now to see young kids like Chloe in spec. I guess one day my kids will be wearing too.

  5. i bet she'll look very cute with her glasses. good that you all discovered this early. never mind...only up to 10 years old :) is she thrilled that she's going to wear her glasses? hey, that place looks like Optimax?

  6. mtc: No, she's not thrilled at all to be told that she needs to wear glasses. The "wear up to 10yo" is only a hope. If her vision doesn't improve, she will have to wear it for good :( We brought her to Vista Eye Specialist. It's not Optimax :)

LittleLamb: There are many causes of myopia. I think for Chloe, it could be due to genetics (both her parents are short-sighted), reading in dim places or watching too much tv... that's all I can think of at the moment.

  9. It could be genetics. Don't think too much dear mummy and Chloe. I hope Chloe's vision will get better.

I started wearing glasses since 13 year old. Gwen's vision is still ok as of now. But not for long I think coz she likes to go very near during reading and writing (and too much iPhone games). I'm going to bring her for another round of eye check up when we are back to KL next year.

  11. Kids these days. The computer, iPads, iPhones, TV and more easily make them short sighted. I am worried for Ethan too though he doesnt watch TV but he plays the iPhone for an hour or so everyday.

I first wore specs when I was in Std 3 :(

  12. I've noticed that it's getting very common to see pre-schoolers wearing specs these days...I started wearing specs when I was in Std 5. My power was 300+ upon discovery. Well, my mom thought I wanted to be IN, to follow the growing trend of my classmates who were all already in specs then. Until one day, she asked me to read the time, and she saw that I literally had to stick my face right in front of the wall clock...that's when I got my eyes tested for short-sightedness. LOL! Bet Chloe will look equally cute in her specs!

  13. Don't be discouraged. Prayerfully she will do without it one day. At the same time, it's pretty common for young children nowadays. Your girl is sweet and adorable. She will always be, even with something on it.

  14. That reminds me, hv to bring mine for chk-up soon. It's been a year. They both hv myopia too but doc said can still wait. As Chloe's got signs of lazy eye, hv to correct immediately. Hope she'll get used to wearing her new specs.

  15. we were very sad too when qiqi had to wear spec at the age of 3, but on the other hand, spec can protect kids eyes esp when other kids hold sharp pencil towards our kid in school, hehe....

  16. Maybe it's inherit from daddy and mommy too, cause both are wearing spec.

  17. oh.. hope you get your eyesight in good shape after wearing it... and good to be able to track it early.. and all thanks to your daddy & mummy observation

  18. Kids nowadays are wearing glasses at younger age. TV, computer and those gadgets contributes mainly to our eyesight deterioration. But some are inherit from parents.

Hope that chloe's eyesight gets improved with the help of lenses. The power will get reduced / maintained, after some time, right?

  19. It is a big step for anyone!
I had my big step only 4 months ago and because I was so unfamiliar with the whole process it really made me feel uncomfortable.

I had a nice optician though and she reassured me that, while I was a bit late with seeing someone about this issue, my eyes weren't as bad as I thought they were.

    Brave kid!
