Daddy's Day

Yesterday was Father's Day and we had a great time doing fun things at home. Actually every weekend is Father's Day to me because we spend a lot of quality time together, doing the things that we like and just enjoying each other's company. This special day was no different. Although there wasn't any celebration for my daddy dearest, I did make a little something for him.

Showered him with loving kisses first thing in the morning...

Later in the day, I made a cake for him (under mummy's supervision, of course). My favourite part was sifting the ingredients... flour and cocoa powder.

Mixing the batter was fun too (it was then poured into the mini baking tin and steamed).

Decorating the serving plate with some organic blueberries and nectarine slices

Fruity chocolate cake for the best daddy in the world :)

For you, daddy... nice or not?

More bonding time at the park in the evening. This is our latest favourite game... frisbee!

I love you super-duper much, daddy! <3 <3 <3

A Little Something For Teacher (3)

We celebrated Teacher's Day in my kindy today. Mummy and I decided to make something for my dedicated teachers at the very last minute, which was yesterday. Mummy suggested making the Horlicks Doggie Cookies that we made last time and I happily agreed with her idea.

I "started work" immediately after returning home (and after bath, of course) from my kindy field trip to Pusat Sains Negara. I was eager to start work despite waking up at 6:30am and was out the whole day with no proper rest in between.

Girl at work...

Tada! Aren't they cute? My job was to assemble the doggies' features... Koko Krunch for the ears, chocolate rice for the eyes and chocolate chip for the nose

Mummy praised me for a job well done. These doggies looked much better than those in our previous batch (but somehow tasted not as good)

Baked and stored in glass jars

Mummy also helped me make these mini cards (as gift tags)...

... and I wrote a short note in Chinese for my teacher inside the mini card, thanking her for her guidance and care

A simple gift for my 3 lovely teachers

This morning, when mummy sent me to school, she was greeted by my school principal Ms J, who quickly fished out the craft that we made for her last year. Ms J thanked us again for last year's gift and said that she loved it very much. Needless to say, mummy and I were beaming :)

I Baked a Cake

Recently, mummy's old buddy, Auntie BS, gave her steamed chocolate cake recipe. Knowing very well that mummy can't bake and has never been successful in her attempts to bake a decent cake, she gave her a very simple, fool-proof recipe. It's so simple and infallible that even a 5.5 year old like me can do it!

Making this for the second time today, I felt like a pro already hehe...

I've washed my hands, I've put on my apron, I'm all ready to start work!

Believe it or not, I did this all by myself! Well, almost. I was under mummy's supervision and of course, the steaming part was done by her because I am not ready to handle a pot of boiling water yet.

Sift the flour

Sift the cocoa powder

Add sugar

Crack in an egg

"Pump" 3 spoons of milk
Combine everything together and mix well... add in some chocolate chips

Wait... *tick tock tick tock*  the cake needs to be steamed for 15 minutes

Tada! Steamed chocolate cake... I made one :) It's very moist and we love it very much! Since it is a mini loaf, it's just nice for the 3 of us.

Ooh, smells very good and tastes even better!

1 piece is not enough... indulging in my 2nd piece!

Here is the recipe if you would like to try it:

1-Egg Chocolate Cake*

Dry ingredient: 4 tbsp self-raising flour
                        2 tbsp cocoa powder
                        1 tsp baking powder

Wet ingredient: 3 tbsp milk
3 tbsp cooking oil / melted butter
5 tbsp sugar (mummy reduced to 2 because she added chocolate chips)
                         1 egg
                         1/2 tsp vanilla essence
                         3 tbsp chocolate chips (optional)

Sift all the dry ingredients and put aside. Put all the wet ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Add in the dry ingredients and mix well. Add in chocolate chips. Pour batter into a mini loaf pan. Pre-boil a pot with just enough water for steaming. When the water comes to a boil, place the mini loaf pan into the pot and steam for approximately 15 minutes.

It's just as simple as this

*This recipe requires a mini loaf pan

Our Saturday

It is Saturday today and both mummy and I were "grounded" because daddy had to go to work. Mummy decided to just stay at home with me. We did arts and crafts in the morning... haven't been doing this on a regular basis (supposed to be every Friday) because we usually go grocery-shopping on Friday afternoons.

Well, we did something "nutty" today. During Chinese New Year, we ate a lot of nuts. Mummy kept some of the shells for this purpose...

Small and big peanut shells and pistachio shells

Gluing the nutshells onto the drawing block with UHU glue was quite tricky so mummy did most of it for me.

There... done! Can you figure out what they are?

I just did most of the painting, with a bit of help from mummy (she did some touching-up)...

Painting the clouds... (large Shangdong peanut shells)

Painting the flowers... (pistachio shells)

Done! Nice or not? Hehehehe...

The final product, after some enhancement work using a marker pen

Ladybird, bumblebee, rainbow caterpillar (entirely my idea) and flowers...

Later in the day, Koo-koo came over for a baking session with mummy. They made egg tarts. It was their very first attempt and the tarts turned out quite well...

Egg tart garnished with kiwiberry and grapes

Mmmmm.... yummylicious!

When I was younger, I never liked the custard and ate only the crust whenever I had egg tarts. I even told Koo-koo "Last time I only eat the yellow part. Now, I eat everything" :) I greedily gobbled one and asked for a second piece. As expected, I couldn't finish it and left the remaining quarter for mummy.

Gingerbreadman

For our Friday arts and crafts today, we did something new which was really, really fun and best of all, the end product was edible :) It was Koo-koo who suggested making these Gingerbreadman cookies because she was not working today.

Yes, it was cookie day again for us today... our second within a week!

A dining table-ful of ingredients and ka-changs (tools). We followed this recipe but replaced the golden syrup with organic molasses.

Koo-koo gave me two candy canes and they kept me happily occupied (playing with them) the whole day.

Showing off and making funny faces with my candy canes

Since mummy was too busy to cook lunch, she ordered Domino's Pizza for us.

Classic Hand-tossed Seafood Delight and Crunchy Thin Crust Aloha Chicken

I'm a pizza monster! I ate more than half of the regular-sized thin crust pizza! And the three of us sapu-ed both the pizzas, leaving not a single crumb for daddy hehe

After lunch, we were all raring to start our baking session. Mummy did all the cookie-cutting and baking. I was in-charged of putting the buttons (mini M&M's) on the Gingerbreadmen while Koo-koo did all the icing decorations.

Button up, boys!

Ready to go into the oven!

Our very first Gingerbreadman... err, Gingerbreadboy actually, because of its mini size

Some of the cute, playful and funny expressions done by Koo-koo. The one on the top left corner with "chicken pox" was my favourite haha!

Gingerbreadboy walking the dog...

This is our "arts and crafts" for today

The whole Gingerbead clan :)

For Koo-koo's friends

They turned out very well and tasted delicious! Mummy was very surprised that I liked it cos it had a strong aroma of ginger (we used fresh, grated ginger) and cinnamon. Not bad, considering the fact that this was our very first attempt :) Although our baking activity ended at 5pm, the spice-y aroma lingered in our kitchen until night!
