My Precious Pet Worms

Recently, I brought home a cup of earthworms from school. It was part of my Science project where I learned about earthworms and their habitat. As soon as I reached home, I laid out the rules for mummy to follow.

1. They need to stay in a dark place. Do not open the black paper (cover) ok!
2. They can only eat wastes and wet leaves.
3. They cannot eat chilli or anything spicy. They also cannot eat garlic, onion, sour things and dairy products (teacher said).
4. They dislike vibration and rough movements. I guess they must have hated the bus ride home just now hehe...

It didnt occur to mummy how much I loved and adored these squirmy little creatures until this conversation took place the following morning before I left for school...

Me: Mummy, later remember to feed them lunch, ok?
Mummy: *teasingly* OK, I'll pour some milk in later.
Me: No! Milk is a dairy product and they can't take it.
Mummy: Then I'll chop some garlic for them...
Me: NO! Cannot!
Mummy: *still wanted to irritate me further as usual* Oh, they like sour things, right? Maybe some lemon juice will do.
Me: Noooooooo!!! I have a hidden camera in the house and I can see you. I also have a hidden hammer that will come out and bang your head if you give any of these!
Mummy: @-@

A play dough worm that I made before bringing back the real ones. Notice my wrong spelling for "anus" and "segmented" hehe...

Me and my precious wormies...

The habitat that I made on my own by filling a plastic cup with alternate layers of sand and soil. Teacher gave me 4 worms to put inside.

Can you spot Worm 1? ;)

Theme Day: Carat and Carrot

The first Theme Day of the year was held today. Last week, as soon as I brought the circular home, I told mummy eagerly "I choose CARROT!"

Why carrot?

... because I am in K2 Mandarin Elective and our assigned theme was Things Found Underground

Mummy felt that a carrot was too ordinary so she encouraged me to think of something else. She even gave me a few suggestions...

Mummy: How about potatoes?
Me: No
Mummy: A gopher?
Me: No
Mummy: An earthworm?
Me: Eeeeeee... no way!
Mummy: A gemstone? A diamond, perhaps?
Me: *eyes widened* Yes! I want diamond!
Mummy: But I thought you chose carrot? So make up your mind now... diamond or carrot?
Me: BOTH!

So diamond and carrot it was. However, we did not start our diamond project until the very last minute, which was this morning, just before going to school! It was rush-work done in a cincai manner and my diamond necklace was created in under 10 minutes...

Still clad in my pyjamas, I quickly cut out a diamond shape (drawn on a cereal box by mummy)

Applied glue and pasted the diamond picture on it

As for the carrot, mummy just grabbed one from the fridge. How easy is that? :p There was a reason behind why I insisted on bringing a carrot to school.

Things found underground... a no-carat diamond and a carrot ^-^

Now, check out my ENORMOUS diamond pendant hahaha!

The most fun part was what I did after school. Well, here's where the carrot came in. Meet Topsy & Turvy, my kindy's two pet rabbits that I very much wanted to feed...

Feeding Turvy

Extremely cute, soft and fluffy, Topsy & Turvy are loved and adored by all the kids in school, me included. Needless to say, I enjoyed feeding the bunnies and watching them nibble the carrot away.

To Catch a Thief

Last weekend, in Ah Ma's house, we caught a "thief". This "thief" has been feasting on Ah Ma's fruits in her mini fruit garden, creating nuisance and holes in her precious papayas and custard sweet-sops.

This "thief" was none other than the naughty little squirrel and this squirrel must be one of the off-springs or siblings of the many squirrels that Gung-gung has caught in the past.

Some of Ah Ma's fruits of labour... the papaya was partially nibbled by the naughty squirrel!

Mummy quickly asked Gung-gung to set the mouse-trap again so that I could have a closer look at the culprit. Well, luck was on our side. The very next morning, the mouse trap was OCCUPIED!

Using a slice of papaya as bait.... GOTCHA!

Gung-gung said this was a "teenager squirrel"... not fully grown up yet. It was rather small and its tail was not quite bushy yet and mummy thought it looked more like a rat... eeewwwwww! But I adored it!

Hello squirrel! I had a good, close-up look at the squirrel before it got "exiled" to a faraway land

Previously, Gung-gung always released his catch in a forest nearby but today, since I was around, he brought us to the Lake Gardens instead.

As soon as Gung-gung opened the cage in the Lake Garden, the squirrel sprang out, ran up a huge tree and disappeared into it within seconds!

Wheeeeeeeeee! Free at last (but no more papayas for you!)

Bye-bye squirrel. On our way home, I pulled a long face and said "I miss the squirrel" haha.

Free Pets

Very often, the organic vegetables that mummy buys come with "free gifts" inside and these gifts come in the form of caterpillars and snails. They are usually put into ventilated boxes and given to me as "pets".

These free "pets" can stay alive in the refrigerator for a week or more but once they are out, they usually last only a day or two although they are given food, water and shelter.

Meet Turdy the snail (name given by me)

I love to play with it but dare not touch it hehe.

Hello, how are you? (talking to Turdy)

Turdy trying to escape through the tiny hole...

As expected, Turdy died two days later.

Previously we also had a few caterpillars. Among them was Salty (also named by me).

Big, fat Salty the caterpillar and an unnamed baby

Salty too died after a day and our hope to see it turn into a butterfly or something was dashed yet again :(

Ok, ok... I DID have a real pet some time back. It's here.

My 1st Pet

Yay! I finally got my very first pet today. They are two red honey gouramis named Bubbles and Dorothy (named after Elmo's goldfish in Elmo's World).

My very first aquatic pet

I love to feed them. I keep asking mummy to let me feed them. I don't understand why mummy always refuses. She says we can only feed them twice a day. Everytime mummy says no, I'd cry...

But I wanna feed my fish. I wanna feed my fish, I wanna feed my fish...

Duchess and I

I have never touched a real animal before. First of all, I am not brought up in an animal-lover- environment. Second, mummy is over anxious about 1001 things about animals... Is the animal clean? Will it bite? etc. So finally, here I am... touching a dog for the first time!

This is Duchess, Auntie BS's 8-year-old precious "daughter"
